Botox and Dysport are simple non-surgical treatments that temporarily smooth and reduce the appearance of deep folds, crow’s feet, wrinkles, and frown lines. Both treatments are safe and FDA approved.
DNA Wellness & Longevity Institute uses the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, referred to by its product name Botox® (distributed by Allergan®) and Dysport (distributed by Medicis) . Botox and Dysport treatments are safe and popular non-surgical injections used to temporarily reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet near the eyes. DNA Wellness & Longevity Institute’s staff have had extensive training in Botox and Dysport techniques and can also offer treatment of frown lines around the mouth (marionette lines), bands in the neck (platysmal banding) and necklace lines. Botox is also highly effective in treating excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis); see below for details.
Q. What are Botox & Dysport, exactly?
A. It is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This purified protein blocks the release of acetylcholine and relaxes muscles.
Q. How do they work?
A. Normally, your brain sends electrochemical messages to your muscles to make them contract and move. These messages are transmitted from a nerve to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. Botox blocks the nerve from releasing acetylcholine. As a result, the muscle contractions stop or are greatly reduced, which in turn reduces the wrinkles in that area.
Q. How soon will I see a difference, and how long will it last?
A. Clients can usually see results within days of treatment, but the full effect can take up to 10 days. Visible results have been shown to last up to 3-5 months, and after that you should return for follow-up treatment. Results last longer after you have received consecutive treatments over time.
Q. What is the treatment like?
A. Botox cosmetic and Dysport are quick and minimally invasive procedures. Discomfort is minimal and brief. No anesthesia is required, although very sensitive clients may opt to numb the area with a cold pack or numbing cream prior to injection. There is no down time, you may resume all your normal activities immediately.
Q. How does Botox treat excessive underarm sweating?
A. Botox treatment can help control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. Excessive sweating should cease within approximately four weeks of your treatment. Periodic treatments can last from 6-8 months – give us a call, or come by, and we can tell you more about this very effective treatment.
Q. Am I going to look different?
A. This is one of the most common questions I get from a new and first time botox client. Unfortunately, we all see the frozen faces on tv, movies, and magazines. Frozen can definitely be accomplished if that’s what you are going for, but you do have the option of having movement of the muscles being treated. A good injector will take the time to survey these options with you and tailor your treatment to match your personal goals. I always have this conversation up front with my clients prior to treating because your personal goals are important to me. In short, you don’t have to look different than yourself…if anything you’ll just get lots of compliments on how great your skin looks!
Q. Do you dilute your Botox?
A. The name Botox is used commonly for neurotoxin treatments like Kleenex is in the tissue world. There are currently three FDA approved neurotoxins on the market in the United States. Botox (Allergan), Dysport (Medicis), and Xeomin (Merz). All neurotoxins come as a dried powder in a vacuum sealed glass vial. Our medspa can provide all three options to clients. For Botox, we purchases 100 unit vials. Prior to treatment it is diluted with bacteriostatic 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution. There are different dilution ratios that can be used to target different injection sites, and this is determined by each treatment professional. The more the Botox is diluted, the bigger radius it will have in treatment coverage. For example, a 1:1 or one to one ratio means that for every 100 units of Botox, there is 1 ml of bacteriostatic 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution. For our practice, this dilution is standard. At times, a 2:1 or 2ml of solution for every 100 units of Botox is used to cover a larger radius from injection site. When using Botox for hyperhydrosis of the underarms, hands, or feet, a 4:1 ratio is used. The number of Botox units injected does not change when using a hirer dilution ratio. The amount of fluid injected increases to achieve the same dosing. There are many other dilution ratios that can be used, but these summarize the dilution methods that are most commonly used in our medspa practice. Our office standard for Dysport is 1.5ml of bacteriostatic 0.9% Sodium Chloride in a 300 unit vial.
Q. Is Botox Botulism (food poisoning)?
A.Botulism in this regard is a foodborne illness. It is rare but can be fatal when food contaminated with the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum is ingested. Botox is not botulism, but it is purified from the same type of bacterium. When used properly and injected by a trained professional, Botox is a very safe treatment of choice for the improvement of moderate to severe frown and crow’s feet lines.
Q. How would you compare Botox and Dysport?
A. The simplest way to compare Botox and Dysport is to refer to them as Pepsi and Coca-Cola. They are both neurotoxins (dark sodas), just made by two different manufactures. Some people like Pepsi more and some people like Coca-Cola. I am positive that Allergan and Medicis would not appreciate this simple analogy, but this, in my opinion, is a great starting point when discussing the two choices you have. Botox is by far the industry leader in mild to moderate reduction of glabellar, forehead, crow’s feet (and many more) lines. Some prefer Dysport because they feel that it sets in a day or twosooner. I personally do not have a preference and would encourage my client to choose whichever product they have a history with and/or prefer. We price our Botox twice as much as Dysport because we use twice as many Dysport units when injecting. Botox and Dysport are not packaged with the same amount of neurotoxin units or diluted with the same amount of bacteriostatic 0.9% Sodium Chloride. In the end, the cost is the same to our clients.
Q. Is it painful?
A. I always say, “Little effort, high reward.” Meaning, the procedure is very quick and painless in the grand scheme of things. We use a small insulin needle for injections. You will feel a pinch, but I do not think you will be able to brag about the pain to your friends. However, I completely understand if needles and/or pain are not your thing. I am more than happy to numb or ice the area of treatment prior to and after treatment. Your comfort and ease of mind are important to me.
What is a unit?
A. A unit is a measurement of Botox that signifies the dose being used. Just like a dash on the ruler represents 1 millimeter, so does one dash on the insulin syringe signify 1 unit of Botox.
Q. How many (units) would I need?
A. Each treatment requires a professional evaluation and a tailored treatment. Dosing can vary widely depending on your goals and the muscles being treated. It is hard to determine without a face to face consultation.
Q. At what age should I start these treatments?
A. Botox is approved for use in men or women ages 18-65. Botox can be used a preventative measure or a corrective measure. If you think you are ready, I would recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation. We can assess your goals and possible treatment plan.
